Combining Technology with Tradition in Lighting Design

Ariel Zuckerman's 'Knitted' is a unique and original lighting collection that stands out for its combination of technology and tradition. The design was inspired by the organic forms and repeated patterns found in nature's microorganisms. The goal was to create a fabric pattern that mimics the look and shape that comes out from fractals.

The unique properties of 'Knitted' lie in its construction. Acrylic threads are knitted in fixed patterns with wool crochet to create a three-dimensional sheet of fabric which serves as a lighting fixture. This process was developed in collaboration with Oded Sapir and textile designer Adva Bruner, resulting in a combination of industrial knitted fabric with a handmade crochet detail.

The fabric is fitted onto a rigid skeletal structure, creating a light fixture with an organic feel and a rich colourfulness. The fabric is knitted in an automatic machine that forms the three-dimensional grid, to a sleeve-like shape, then the finish detail is made in a handmade crochet knitting. The polyethylene ball can come in three basic sizes: 30/40/50 cm in diameter.

The 'Knitted' collection was developed over almost a year in 2013. One of the key challenges in its development was to create a 3D patterned fabric that would look organic, yet be functional in terms of assembly, function, and act as a light shade. The result is a lighting fixture that combines technology with tradition, offering a unique aesthetic and functional appeal.

'Knitted' has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
